Top Time Wasters

At ASA's conference, on 18th April 2008, 18 delegates made 31 nominations for Top Time Waster.

In order the "winners" were:

First place - Legal Service Commission (14)

  • the new reporting requirements which take 4 to 5 times as long as before and errors are returned months later with a request to amend within 48 hours
  • being asked for the same information several times
  • the new LSC extension forms - for upper cost limits and immigration
  • codes: end/matter codes and the immigration codes
  • chaning things all the time!

Second place - local authorities (6)
  • four nominations referred to homeless persons units who are impossible to contact and where advice agencies have to "pursue a clearly priority homeless case ... the local authority often knows their duty but will avoid acceptance - blatantly in some cases - until we get involved"
  • in a tender for advice services, one local authority had asked about sustainable timber management policies!

Also nominated ...

Department of Work & Pensions (2), advice agencies (2), Home Office (2), utility companies (2), Asylum and Immigration Tribunal (1), Employment Tribunal (1) and the "different monitoring requirements of funders" (1).
