How to measure client outcomes
These documents draw on experience gained from 12 outcomes studies that ASA carried out as part of the Big Lottery funded Working Together for Advice project. Taken together they make up a comprehensive guide on how to measure outcomes, but here they have been broken down into shorter guides to cover specific topics.
The first document contains some of our favourite quotes from clients. We hope that seeing these will help motivate you to collect outcomes information from your own clients.
Guides 1 - 5 are designed to provide practical help and examples to advice agencies that want to collect information about the outcomes of their work
Guide 1: What are outcomes and why collect them?
Guide 2: Absolute beginners : what you need in place before you start
Guide 3: Choosing your method: survey or focus group?
Guide 4: Conducting surveys : how to design and carry them out
Guide 5: Conducting a focus group : why use a focus group and how to do it
Guide 6 is a table giving information about the pilot agencies that developed questionnaires to collect outcomes information. It contains links to the questionnaires they developed. You can use these to develop your own questionnaires.
The analyser is an excel spreadsheet that you can use to collate and analyse your results and put them into tables.
The evaluation contains a summary of the pilot work and some lessons for funders and policy makers on the challenges of measuring outcomes.
