Course 1 outline - Making Performance Appraisals Work

SRA CPD Intermediate/Advanced level (4.5 CPD hours)

Are your staff motivated and contributing directly to the success of your organisation? Do they know they are valued? Are they giving their best?

This NEW course examines performance appraisal in a target and outcome driven environment. It has a specific focus on honing and developing your skills if you are responsible for conducting the annual performance review of staff working under a civil legal aid contract. It will give you the opportunity to review your current appraisal process, your skills as an appraiser and to turn theory into practice

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Encourage the building of focused and effective teams
  • Bring the minimum requirements within the Specialist Quality Mark to life by exploring different approaches to this controversial area of people and performance management
  • Understand the relevance of effective performance appraisal and how it can fit into an overall system of performance management
  • Describe the appraisal process and the key elements within it
  • Appreciate the key skills required of an effective appraiser including effective communication
  • Describe and demonstrate effective positive and critical feedback
  • Set achievable objectives and targets for your staff
  • Meet and share your knowledge and experience with other professionals

This course is aimed at people who currently conduct appraisals or who want to gain the key skills in advance of taking on the responsibility for conducting them. Participants are likely to be management, or category supervisor level, who want to make sure they are getting the most out of both the process and their staff. It would also be suitable as a refresher for more experienced managers/appraisers
