Providing better information for the public

Who is it for?

This course is designed for all those involved in producing and commissioning information for the public on their rights or the issues of every day life – whether in a government body, an advice service, specialist charity, or a community organisation.

What this course will cover

This course is about the issues you need to consider when producing information for the public in order for it to be as effective and helpful as possible.
It will help participants to commission or prepare, plan and produce law-related information that meets the needs of their target audiences.

What this course isn't

It is not a writing course, and it isn't about things like plain English or grammar.
By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by Better Information and discuss the qualities of better information.
  • Set objectives for an individual piece of information.
  • Describe the needs of a target audience.
  • Understand how to design material to meet the needs of the target audience.
  • Understand the importance of using a variety of presentation techniques.
  • Decide what style and tone will be most effective for each piece of information.
  • Be familiar with Advicenow's Better Information Handbook and use it as a learning resource.
