Outcomes of advice: Youth Access activities
As part of our Rights to Access Project (RAP), which aims to improve young people's access to legal advice, we are developing an Outcomes Toolkit. This will be used by our RAP legal advice ‘pilot’ and ‘good practice’ agencies in the first instance, with a view to it being made available to Youth Access’ wider membership at a later date.
The toolkit will consist of:
- 1. Young Person's Self-Assessment form Part 1 – to be completed at start of advice process
- 2. Young Person's Self-Assessment form Part 2 – to be completed at a later pre-determined point in advice process, e.g. 3 months or close of case
- 3. Adviser Assessment Form – for adviser to record v. simple hard advice outcomes
- 4. Guidance for Advisers
- 5. Guidance for Young People
- 6. Analysis Database for Advice Agencies
The toolkit is designed to capture evidence of the difference that legal advice makes to young people, with a particular link to the five Every Child Matters outcomes, as all youth advice agencies will need to demonstrate the contribution of their services to their local Children's Trust.
The toolkit is currently being tested with young people. Full use by our RAP agencies is scheduled to start in June.
In addition to the Outcomes Toolkit, we have commissioned a small longitudinal study to gather evidence of the impact that legal advice has on young people's lives over time. This will be undertaken by a specialist youth involvement consultant via individual interviews and some groupwork. The sample of young people will be followed up after 6 months and, possibly, a third time a few months after that.
