Outcomes of advice: National Homelessness Advice Service (NHAS) activities

The NHAS is a partnership between Citizens Advice and Shelter through which homelessness and housing advice training, information, consultancy and other support are provided to all CABx in England. Housing advice support is also delivered to independent voluntary sector advice agencies, for example adviceUK members, predominantly in London.

In 2005 we piloted a methodology for capturing housing advice outcomes, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data with a view to moving towards an outcome based approach to monitoring of the project as requested by the funder, the Department of Communities and Local Government.

The focus in 2006 was on refining the core outcomes in terms of tangible changes to the housing situation and developing guidance on their use. This work has been feeding into Citizens Advice development of outcomes recording across the breadth of bureau advice and into the GLA London Housing Advice Strategy group work on implementing the aim of common quality and performance standards and indicators for housing advice across both voluntary and statutory sectors.
