Course 8 outline - Making Debt Work 2010

SRA CPD Intermediate/Advanced level (4.5 CPD hours)

ARE YOU 2010 CONTRACT READY? Have you got your head around multiple matters and know what the LSC thinks about matter splitting in the Debt category? Do you need to become ‘multi-disciplinary’ and open Debt matters as well as NMS in your own subject category?

This course has been ENTIRELY RE-WRITTEN to take into account the transition from Debt category casework under the Unified Contract to that under the 2010 Standard Contract. It relies heavily on conclusions drawn from Legal Services Commission audits and visits, especially where files with multiple matters for the same client were examined

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Maximise your matter start output legitimately, within the rules
  • Explain your reasoning behind any Debt matter splitting should you come under scrutiny
  • Apply the Debt Category Specific Provisions with confidence, whether the Unified or 2010 Standard Contract
  • Understand and apply the key General Provisions of both Contracts to Debt and identify any adaptations you might need to make in preparation for 2010
  • Be better able to justify matter splitting across different categories of law and ensure good practice within consortia
  • Sleep easy, knowing that you crammed what you need to know about Debt contract compliance in 2010 into one day, giving you more time to meet targets

This course is essential for all caseworkers in organisations that have bid for and intend to provide Debt casework under the pending 2010 Contract. It would also be useful for those of you working under different subject categories (eg Welfare Benefits or Housing) who wanted to maximise your potential by becoming ‘multi-disciplinary’: able to open matters and perform contract compliant casework in the Debt category as well as in your own.
